7 May - Day 19 Venice

We expereinced everyday life on the outskirts of the famous floating city first with a fun 15 min walk through the streets of Marghera and 20 min bus trip into the big smoke. THEN we started playing tourist!
Of course, first we cruised the Grand Canal on vaporetto #1

Gorgeous old geezers going for it in their gondola (and G-strings I'm sure)
Another gorgeous old geezer... on the famous big bridge I can't remember the name of right now!
Creepy skeleton house.
Coming to to the end of the Grand Canal
Aggghhhh, what's that I see? (at this point we'd noticed lots of big screens around the piazza and were wonderinbg what might be happening).
Amazing marble and mosaics.

Recently restored.
View from the Basilica
Greg announcing to the crowd that HE (the surprise guest) was about to arrive...
Yes, none other than the Pope had decided to drop by and say hello (see the white, flying pope-mobile in the top right hand corner)! Now the TV cameras and big screens made sense 9and we decided to get out of San Marco before things got too crazy!).
We escaped to the back alleys and canals.

And, of course, had to look at lots of beautiful masks along the way (seamus bought  little one at the end of the day).

Elena thought this busker was pretty cool.
The colourful pasta looked like lollies.
That bridge again, you know the one...
Elena and I satnding on the whatzitzname bridge.
Mmmmm more lollies, this time from Murano.

So many lovely windows...

... and washing waving in the breeze

Time to leave the BIG island (of islands) and head to Murano to look at more glass lollies
We thought one of these would look nice in our new dining room.
Poor Seamus nearly spontaneously combusted with boredom while Elena and I oooo-ed and ahhhh-ed at all the pretty things.
Canals of Murano.

... and anothe pretty window (I can'r resist)
... at look at this lovely crumbling pink render over beautiful bricks
We thought the glass clarinet and guitar were pretty cool, particularly as they are the instruments that Elena and Seamus play.
Thank gawd the girly bit is over - say the boys! Heading home on the bus.
Weary but happy (and although I look it, NOT drunk!)

On the walk home we took a slightly different route and found this very cool fence around a school. Another great day!
